The Dynamics of Change
Pathway To Recovery is a unique drug and alcohol program
developed by Outside In for adolescents and their families.
Both residential (inpatient non-hospital) and outpatient
services are available. Pathway To Recovery utilizes the
Transtheoretical Model of Behavioral Change which
encompasses the Stages of Change developed by Prochaska and
DiClemente. |

|
|
|
The Stages of Change model is supported by empirical
research and provides a distinctive approach to behavior
change that encourages and supports the individual’s
progression in recovery. Client needs are considered from a
whole-person perspective as they progress through five
stages from the Precontemplation Stage through Contemplation
to Preparation to Action and eventually on to Maintenance.
They are challenged to be responsible for their actions and
viewed as capable of change. |

The Motivation To Change
Treatment includes techniques to stimulate the desire to
change, directing clients to identify and strengthen
abilities they already have. Motivational interviewing
reduces resistance and increases client motivation for
change. Clients are given the opportunity to acquire and
experiment with new coping mechanisms in a safe and
supportive environment. Emphasis is placed on self-efficacy,
increased awareness, and the benefits of a substance-free
life-style.

In-Home Outpatient Services
The outpatient program is innovative, providing in-home drug
and alcohol treatment, in addition to community and clinical
settings. In-home services enable a family-based approach
that is often critical to recovery. Adolescents in recovery
benefit enormously from the loving support of their
families. Group work supports the process and provides an
additional forum for growth. Outpatient services also
include screening, comprehensive evaluation, and
recommendations regarding appropriate level of care.

Inpatient Treatment
The residential program combines intensive alcohol and other
drug treatment in an experiential milieu with
wilderness/experiential therapy to produce a high impact
treatment experience for adolescent males. The residential
program is located in the scenic Laurel Mountains near
Ligonier in Westmoreland County.
