Voyagers

Voyagers

A Unique Program that Helps Troubled Boys Better Their Lives

Pro-social Interventions Moral Reasoning Development Activity Intensive Milieu

What began in 1985 as sporadic wilderness excursions for troubled youth has evolved into an innovative approach to working with delinquent males ages 13 through 17.

Voyagers targets the criminal thought process and delinquent behaviors. Our 140 acre campus is located in the eastern part of Westmoreland County, just north of Ligonier, Pennsylvania. Nestled in between Chestnut Ridge and Laurel Mountain, Voyagers students have the opportunity be immersed in an activity-intensive milieu that is both intrinsically stimulating and physically challenging. Activities include hiking, rock climbing, biking, caving, canoeing and more. Students further their education and accrue credits toward graduation in our Licensed Private Academic School. In cooperation with Ligonier Valley School District, Outside In provides regular education, special education, and GED preparation and testing.

After-school programs introduce them to the principles of Balanced and Restorative Justice, competency development, the Facts of Life moral reasoning curriculum and Aggression Replacement Therapy (ART). Through the use of our activity intensive milieu students become more competent as they learn basic life skills and important social skills such as anger management, impulse control, conflict resolution and victim awareness. They participate in activity intensive experiential activities such as adventure initiatives, indoor rock climbing and bouldering, 3-7 day adventure based modules, and an array of on campus recreational opportunities. Each of these activities have been proven to be successful with increasing each student’s self-efficacy, self-awareness, communication, problems solving and social skills.

Students also participate in community service work projects and pay restitution for the crimes they committed. Our students have built cabins, dug waterlines, restored state parks and wild life refuges, developed trail systems, helped local farmers in the community and much more. Community service provides the opportunity to do something for others, learn job skills and develop a work ethic.

Enter Venturing!

Students promoted to our Venturing Crew participate in specialized field-trips. These expeditions present stressful but stimulating opportunities that are highly structured and engineered for success to increase the students’ motivation to change behaviorally, spiritually and emotionally. The result is increased self efficacy assisting them with managing the pressures of society. Students must actively engage the environment with their peers and instructors as a team to successfully complete the expedition.

The incredible accomplishments students achieve at Outside In give rise to a positive, optimistic attitude. Our high impact approach awakens and motivates young men to live life to the fullest, embracing every day as a new opportunity.
