Theological Perspective
Dear Job Candidate,
We are excited about your interest in Outside In!
However, it is important for you to know something about who we are so
you can best evaluate your compatibility with our organizational
culture. Our spirituality is important to us and so we offer the
following remarks to share some of that information with you.
We began serving youth and families as an outreach
ministry of a local nondenominational church and we really believe it is
our God-given privilege to serve the youth and families we come in
contact with. We see it as our mission, and we routinely ask God for
strength and wisdom and sensitivity in the hope that our service will be
fruitful and effective. (We leave the extra “and” between “strength” and
“wisdom” for emphasis.) We are not a Christian organization by charter
but we are, by and large, a group of people deeply indebted to the grace
that is ours through Jesus Christ, trusting that, in love, we may be of
service to our “neighbor”.
Some people are uncomfortable with those who speak
openly of their religious beliefs. Some people are uncomfortable with
those who see their employment as a “mission” worthy of sacrifice and
deserving serious commitment. Some people are uncomfortable with praying
and being present when others pray. We openly discuss spirituality and
religion; we have strong sentiments about our work; we don’t pray as
much as we ought but we’re working on it. Please understand - we’re not
necessarily looking for people like us, but we are looking for people
who love kids and don’t have a problem getting along with people like
us. We hope our actions speak for themselves and we are inspired by the
words of St. Augustine, “Preach always, and, if necessary, use words.”
Perhaps you are looking for an opportunity to
wholeheartedly invest yourself and much of your energy into the needs of
youth and families in crisis – that would be us. I am
Your servant,

Working with Outside In Students
Dear Live-in position Job Candidate:
Outside In is excited about your interest in our organization! However,
it is important to understand what type of students we work with and the
impact on staff of live-in positions. Experience working with youths
will not necessarily prepare you for working with court referred teenage
boys.
We work with a select group of boys who have been
screened according to the presenting issues that put them in the system.
Outside In does not work with excessively violent students or those with
an extensive history of arson or sexual offenses. However, these boys
could have been involved in one or all of the above behaviors. The key
words are “excessively” and “extensive.” Most of the youths are
incorrigibles (in school or at home), truants, or committed some type of
misdemeanor (theft, simple assault, criminal conspiracy, etc.).
One critical personality trait of Outside In staff is
to be able to deal with an extensive amount of conflict and
confrontation. Not only do you need to be able to confront
appropriately, but be able to endure extended periods of conflict. It is
very beneficial to be of a large stature, which will minimize physical
confrontation; but even with that advantage, if you are not able to deal
with criticism, rejection, manipulative behavior, and continual
opposition; you will not be very happy at this job. Having to live-in
does not allow for much personal time which is usually only available
after the boys go to bed, or before they get up. We are continually
training staff on communication skills, but if you do not have a heart
for teens and are not somewhat “gifted” in working with them, this is
not a vocation to just make a living from.
One of the confrontation skills necessary is utilizing
passive restraint. Outside In conducts training classes to instruct on
proper restraining techniques. These are necessary as a last resort when
students are creating an unsafe environment either through stubbornness,
aggressiveness, or violent behavior. Most of the “acting out” of the
students is not personally directed towards staff, but usually due to
their lack of knowledge on dealing with feelings of frustration and
anger. Restraints can occur often during the course of a few days, or
not happen at all for weeks. The better communication and facilitating
skills the staff have, the less restraints that are needed.
I have covered some of the negative aspects of Outside
In to make sure you are not mislead into thinking we resemble a church
or Boy Scout camp atmosphere. However, if you are interested in
utilizing your gift of working with youths and accepting the challenge
of modifying detrimental behaviors and the values of teenage boys,
Outside In is a place where that happens. We are hard workers, but not
hard to work for represented by one of our core organizational values:
Life to the fullest!
Our therapeutic approach is through intensive group
activity. We are an adventure based program utilizing the outdoors as
much as possible as the classroom for learning.
In the full-time residential programs the boys go on
wilderness courses for 2 - 3 weeks, and then come back to our 140 acre
residential campus near Ligonier for 2 - 3 weeks. This cycle is repeated
until they have achieved a weekly average of 90% or above then allowing
them to complete our program and move on with their lives. When this
happens, we feel we have made an impact in the young man’s life and have
prepared him to make wise decisions leading to a productive lifestyle.
In the weekend supervision program the boys are
engaged in adventure based programming, community service projects, and
experiential education trips to enhance learning. The boys participate
in challenging outdoor activities, helping to improve communities, and
experiential learning by visiting major cities (Pittsburgh, D.C.
Gettysburg) and memorials. Seven weekends are to be completed along with
case management in the home. Services can be extended if the student
needs more intervention. The effective implementation of these services
fulfills our mission statement of “Challenging young men to make right
Choices for positive Change”!
Our ultimate reward is when the boys return and relate
how much of a difference Outside In made in their lives. This is
exemplified by having had some staff that were once students in the
program. This letter is written for clarification on
the Outside In working environment and will hopefully assist in your
search for the job that you desire.
Regards,
Christine Dumm
